The Lutz-Kelker bias in trigonometric parallaxes

چکیده
The theoretical prediction that trigonometric parallaxes suffer from a statistical effect, has become topical again now that the results of the Hipparcos satellite have become available. This statistical effect, the so-called Lutz-Kelker bias, causes measured parallaxes to be too large. This has the implication that inferred distances, and hence inferred luminosities are too small. Published analytic calculations of the Lutz-Kelker bias indicate that the inferred luminosity of an object is, on average, 30% too small when the error in the parallax is only 17.5%. Yet, this bias has never been determined empirically. In this paper we investigate whether there is such a bias by comparing the best Hipparcos parallaxes which ground-based measurements. We find that there is indeed a large bias affecting parallaxes, with an average and scatter comparable to predictions. We propose a simple method to correct for the LK bias, and apply it successfully to a sub-sample of our stars. We then analyze the sample of 26 ‘best’ Cepheids used by Feast & Catchpole (1997) to derive the zero-point of the PeriodLuminosity relation. The final result is based on the 20 fundamental mode pulsators and leads to a distance modulus to the Large Magellanic Cloud based on Cepheid parallaxesof 18.56 ± 0.08, consistent with previous estimates.

متن کاملHubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor Parallaxes of Galactic Cepheid Variable Stars: Period-luminosity Relations
We present new absolute trigonometric parallaxes and relative proper motions for nine Galactic Cepheid variable stars: l Car, ζ Gem, β Dor, W Sgr, X Sgr, Y Sgr, FF Aql, T Vul, and RT Aur. We obtain these results with astrometric data from Fine Guidance Sensor 1r, a white-light interferometer on Hubble Space Telescope. We find absolute parallaxes in milliseconds of arc: l Car, 2.01± 0.20 ; ζ Gem...
متن کاملHipparcos parallaxes and period-luminosity relations of high-amplitude δ Scuti stars
Hipparcos parallaxes of high–amplitude δ Scuti stars are used to derive a period–luminosity relation with a scatter of about ±0.1 mag, which is independent from photometric calibrations to absolute luminosities. Comparisonswith several P–L relations from the literature show satisfactory agreement, and all deviations from theHipparcosmean relation canbe explainedby uncertainties in the data avai...

New ages are computed for the stars from the Edvardsson et al. (1993) data set. The revised values are systematically larger toward older ages (t>4 Gyr), while they are slightly lower for t<4 Gyr. The systematic difference to older age becomes ∼2 Gyr smaller, when the LutzKelker correction is applied. The Lutz-Kelker corrected values are slightly older than the ages computed from the Hipparcos ...
متن کاملHipparcos subdwarfs and globular cluster ages : the distance and age of M 92 ?
A new determination of the distance and age of the old globular cluster M 92 (NGC 6341) is obtained from a consideration of a set of more than 500 subdwarf candidates with Hipparcos parallaxes. Precise [Fe/H] values are derived for most stars using the equivalent width of the Coravel cross-correlation function. We examine at some length the biases affecting the determination of the mean luminos...
